Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. That date has been locked in since Activision's reveal in May and is not a rumor or an estimate — it's the confirmed, publisher-stated release day, and the game is effectively already rolling out: Campaign Early Access for pre-order customers went live on October 16, a full week ahead of the wide launch.

What's confirmed

Activision revealed Modern Warfare 4 on May 28, 2026, opening pre-orders the same day across Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net and Steam. The publisher ran two beta windows over the summer — an Early Access beta from August 21–25 for pre-order holders, followed by an open beta for everyone from August 28 to September 1.

The game ships in Standard and Vault editions. Both include the Open Beta early access already completed, Campaign Early Access, and a Hunter Killer operator skin. The Vault Edition adds extra operator packs, a signature weapon collection, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ deployment bonus. Activision has confirmed Modern Warfare 4 will not be available through Xbox Game Pass at launch, and it is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One — this is a current-generation release only.

Who's actually making it

Infinity Ward — the studio that created the Modern Warfare sub-series in 2007 — is leading development, not Sledgehammer Games as some fans assumed earlier in the year. As with every recent Call of Duty, the credits run much wider than one studio: Activision's own central design and technology teams, Beenox, Demonware, High Moon Studios, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch and Activision Shanghai are all listed as contributing to the project. That multi-studio model has been standard practice across Call of Duty's annual releases since the early 2020s, splitting work on campaign, multiplayer, Zombies and the DMZ mode across different internal teams rather than one studio building the whole package alone.

Where this fits in the yearly cycle

Modern Warfare 4 follows 2025's Black Ops 7 and 2023's Modern Warfare III, continuing Activision's unbroken run of a new premium Call of Duty every year since 2005. That cadence isn't changing for 2026, but Activision has signaled a bigger shift for the entry after this one.

Chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl said earlier this year that Call of Duty's 2027 release will be a brand-new sub-franchise rather than another Black Ops or Modern Warfare game, something he described as laying "the groundwork" for already. Industry reporting has pointed to Sledgehammer Games as the studio behind that new series, reportedly built around a modern-day setting, but Activision hasn't named the studio or the game publicly, and that detail should be treated as a report, not a confirmed fact, until the publisher says otherwise.

The bottom line

There's no ambiguity left around Modern Warfare 4's release date — October 23 is locked, and the pre-launch rollout is already underway with campaign access live. The open question for the franchise now isn't this year's game, but what comes after it: whether 2027 really breaks from the Black Ops/Modern Warfare rotation, and whether Sledgehammer ends up being the studio that builds it. Gamingonix will update this piece as Activision confirms more.
