Overwatch 2's Season 5 update, "A Grim Doctrine," went live October 6. Blizzard's patch brings a new support hero, full kit reworks for two existing heroes, a new Escort map, and changes to competitive rewards and the battle pass shop.
Doctrine Joins the Roster
Doctrine is the season's new support hero, unlocked for all players at launch rather than requiring a Battle Pass purchase. He fights with the Eternal Scepter, a mid-to-long-range weapon that damages enemies and heals allies, and builds his kit around Infuse, a two-charge resource that temporarily empowers whichever ability he uses next — his weapon, his movement, or his healing drones.
His Invigorating Drones ability deploys support drones onto an ally that boost healing and attack speed; when infused, the drones affect Doctrine himself too. His movement ability, Shrouded Momentum, lets him dash horizontally with damage reduction, or fly freely when infused. His ultimate redistributes life between teams, granting allies Overhealth while capping the maximum health of enemies caught in it.
Blizzard nerfed Doctrine ahead of launch after a public trial weekend showed him outperforming the rest of the support roster. The attack-speed bonus from Invigorating Drones was cut from 35 percent to 30 percent, and Shrouded Momentum's damage reduction dropped from 50 percent to 40 percent with a one-second longer cooldown.
Sombra Moves to Support
The season's biggest structural change is Sombra shifting from Damage to Support. Her signature Hack ability and her old Virus ability are both gone, and so is her ability to stealth indefinitely outside of combat the way players are used to.
In their place, Sombra gets Hotfix, a targeted heal-over-time that lands 65 instant healing plus 25 per second, up to 175 total, and can be cast without breaking her own invisibility. Her second new ability, Cyberspace, is a zone-denial tool that deals 40 damage or heals 40 on impact, then leaves a lingering area that damages enemies and heals allies over three seconds while weakening affected targets' own damage and healing output by half. Her EMP ultimate is unchanged, though a new Perk lets it apply Hotfix to nearby allies as well as disabling enemies.
Roadhog's Hook Gets Softer
Roadhog's primary fire, Scrap Gun, now fires in a two-shot burst instead of a single blast, alongside adjustments to Chain Hook. Blizzard said the goal is to cut down on one-shot and near-one-shot hook combos that players have long found frustrating to play against, while keeping the hook useful as a positioning and displacement tool. Roadhog also gained a new ability, Trash Compactor, as part of the same kit update.
New Map and Other Changes
Watchpoint: Grímsvötn is Overwatch's first new Escort map in several years, set in a volcanic Icelandic fissure where attackers push the payload beneath a flowing lava waterfall. The map ties narratively into Doctrine's backstory and his connection to Doomfist.
Elsewhere, Blizzard added custom restricted-word filters to social text chat, hiding flagged messages behind a warning players can choose to reveal. On the competitive side, the Top 500 Challenger Leaderboard now sorts by Rank by default instead of Challenger Score, and the Heat Bonus has been removed. Legacy Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15 are now purchasable in a new Unvaulted Battle Pass tab in the shop, though Mythic Skins, Mythic Prisms, Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, and Player Titles are no longer obtainable through those older passes.
Why It Matters
Reworking two heroes in the same patch, including moving one across roles entirely, is a bigger swing than Overwatch 2's typical seasonal balance pass. Sombra players lose the stealth-and-disable playstyle the hero has had since the original Overwatch, while tank players get a Roadhog that trades burst lethality for a steadier damage pattern — both changes likely to be contentious in the early days of the season as players relearn long-familiar kits.
Doctrine's pre-launch nerfs suggest Blizzard is trying to avoid the kind of new-hero dominance that's followed recent releases, though whether the adjustments were enough won't be clear until ranked data from the first weeks of Season 5 comes in. Full patch notes, including minor bug fixes, are available on Blizzard's official Overwatch news site.
