Metro 2039 will launch February 4, 2027, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver confirmed the date alongside a new gameplay trailer, ending months of speculation about when the next entry in the post-apocalyptic Moscow series would arrive.
The studio first revealed Metro 2039 in April 2026, then followed up with an extended gameplay trailer at Gamescom's Opening Night Live in September, where the February window was locked in. That's roughly a ten-month gap between reveal and release, faster than the multi-year turnaround between 2019's Metro Exodus and its announcement.
What's confirmed about the story
Metro 2039 introduces a new protagonist, a fully voiced character known as The Stranger, who returns to the Moscow Metro to track down Hunter, a former member of the elite Spartan order who now leads an authoritarian faction called the Novoreich. It's a departure from Artyom, the silent protagonist who carried the first three games, though 4A Games hasn't said whether Artyom appears in a supporting role.
The setting keeps the series' mix of underground tunnels and surface exploration, with the new trailer showing a storm brewing over a ruined Moscow skyline. 4A Games has described the narrative as continuing the franchise's core themes of survival and moral ambiguity rather than rebooting the series outright.
Gameplay systems shown so far
The Gamescom trailer confirmed the return of 4A Games' weapon customization system, letting players swap barrels, scopes, stocks and ammo types mid-mission to adapt to different encounters. The studio is also carrying over the series' signature blend of stealth, survival mechanics and scripted horror sequences, paired with a mix of new and classic weapons.
On the technical side, 4A Games confirmed ray tracing support and a dedicated 60fps Performance Mode on both PS5 and PS5 Pro. No PC system requirements have been published yet.
What's next
With release roughly four and a half months out, Deep Silver hasn't announced pricing, special editions or preorder bonuses. The publisher also hasn't confirmed whether the game will land day one on Xbox Game Pass, something that shaped the launch conversation around Metro Exodus in 2019. Gamingonix will update this article once editions, pricing and platform-specific details are confirmed.
