Marvel's Wolverine launches on PS5 on September 15, and Insomniac Games has used the days before release to detail how it approached the character. In a new PlayStation Blog post published September 14, creative director Marcus Smith, narrative director Walt Williams, and senior animation director Brian Wyser laid out the design choices behind Logan's combat, movement, and story.
The game is a PS5 exclusive at launch, with no PC or Xbox version announced. It goes live at 12 a.m. ET on September 15, though PlayStation has said West Coast players can start as early as 9 p.m. PT on September 14. Insomniac, the Sony-owned studio behind the Spider-Man series and Ratchet & Clank, is publishing the game with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel Games.
Vulnerability over invincibility
Smith said the team's core challenge was writing meaningful stakes for a character whose healing factor makes him nearly impossible to kill. Rather than lean on physical danger, Insomniac built the story around Logan's guardedness. "Despite his gruff defense mechanisms, he's a very vulnerable person," Smith said. "And you get a sense of why he puts up these barriers. That at his core, he's a very sensitive person."
Narrative director Walt Williams described the goal as getting players to see past the claws. "I want players to walk away with empathy for what this man has gone through," Williams said, noting that Logan "has suffered so much and lost so much, while at the same time brought so much to the people around him" and "has sacrificed, in many cases, everything."
Combat built around weight, not spectacle
Insomniac has been explicit that Wolverine's combat is meant to feel distinct from Spider-Man's acrobatics. According to the developers, Logan fights in a way that's deliberately heavier and messier — closer to a brawler absorbing punishment than a graceful action hero. Animation lead Brian Wyser said the team pulled from Logan's history across comics, film, and prior games to land on movement that reads as "weighty, efficient, and animalistic," including a quadrupedal running stride the team carried over into general traversal.
Insomniac has previously said it scrapped fully built combat sequences during development when they didn't feel true enough to the character, and that enemy variety is designed to force players to change tactics rather than rely on one dominant playstyle. The studio has also confirmed a low-gore toggle for players who want the same combat without the game's default level of blood and dismemberment.
What's still to be seen
Reviews and detailed impressions have not been published yet, and Gamingonix has not verified performance or technical details firsthand. Insomniac has not said whether a PC port is planned down the line, following the pattern set by its Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank releases, which arrived on PC roughly a year or more after their PS5 debuts. Marvel's Wolverine is available on PS5 starting September 15.
