Nintendo has confirmed a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch November 5, 2026. The game was first teased during a Nintendo Direct on June 9, 2026, with a cinematic reveal trailer and no gameplay. An extended gameplay showcase and the release date followed during a dedicated Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 8, 2026.
This is a ground-up remake, not a remaster or the kind of visual touch-up the 2011 Nintendo 3DS version received. Nintendo has rebuilt the 1998 original with new character models, textures, and environments, and has not detailed any plans to bring it to the original Switch.
What's Confirmed About Gameplay
Nintendo's September Direct showed Link moving through Kokiri Forest, Hyrule Field, and an expanded, fully explorable Hyrule Castle Town, with Navi accompanying him as before. Confirmed changes from the N64 original include:
- A dedicated jump button, replacing the original's context-sensitive auto-jump
- Full manual camera control, rather than the fixed and tank-style angles of 1998
- Faster swimming and a new dash ability
- Item and equipment scrolling similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Gyroscopic aiming via motion controls for ranged weapons
- Fully voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue, a first for this story — the original had no spoken dialogue at all
- A live orchestral score replacing the N64's synthesized soundtrack
Nintendo says load times are faster and the game should feel "snappier and more satisfying" than the original, though the company hasn't published technical specs like frame rate or resolution targets. The remake also connects to the Nintendo Switch App's Zelda Notes service, which adds an interactive map, progress tracking, a virtual ocarina, and quiz-style challenges tied to the game.
Nintendo has not confirmed whether any dungeons, puzzles, or story beats have been altered beyond the visual and control overhaul. Gamingonix will update this piece if that changes.
Price and Release Details
The remake costs $69.99 physically and $59.99 digitally, both confirmed by Nintendo ahead of the September Direct. It launches exclusively on Switch 2 on November 5, 2026 — one day before Grand Theft Auto 6's scheduled release, putting it in a crowded week for major launches.
The Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 Console
Alongside the game, Nintendo confirmed a Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 console, priced at $519.99, with a matching Pro Controller at $99.99. Both launch October 29, 2026 — a week before the remake itself. The console features Triforce branding across the system, dock, and Joy-Con 2 controllers, with gold dock accents. Nintendo has confirmed the console does not include a copy of the game; it must be purchased separately.
What's Still Unconfirmed
Nintendo has not named the studio behind the remake. Online leaks and retailer listings have pointed to candidates including Grezzo — which built Ocarina of Time 3D and Echoes of Wisdom — and Monolith Soft, but neither has been credited by Nintendo as of this writing, and that detail should be treated as speculation until Nintendo confirms it.
A physical Collector's Edition has also circulated in retailer leaks out of France, reportedly alongside separate Ocarina of Time-themed Joy-Con and Pro Controller listings, but Nintendo has not officially announced or priced any such edition. Until Nintendo confirms contents and pricing, treat those listings as unverified. Gamingonix will update this article as more details are confirmed ahead of the November 5 launch.
