HBO has released the trailer for "Lanterns" episode 8, the season 1 finale titled "Dirt and Stars," confirming it will air Sunday, October 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max. The preview centers on Sinestro and has already set off a wave of fan speculation about where the season's central mystery is headed.
"Lanterns," part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, premiered August 16 and stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with Kelly Macdonald also leading the cast. Chris Mundy serves as showrunner, with Damon Lindelof and Tom King as co-writers and executive producers. The show splits its story across two timelines, 2016 and 2026, built around the investigation into who shot Hal Jordan in a small Nebraska town.
What the trailer actually shows
The footage picks up from where episode 7 left off: John Stewart, alongside a digital projection of Hal referred to by fans as the "Hal-O-Gram," travels through a portal to Antaan, a destroyed alien homeworld, where they find Sinestro imprisoned in a tower. In the new trailer, Sinestro delivers a speech centered on fear, pushing back on the Green Lantern Corps' core belief that willpower and fearlessness are what make a Lantern strong. That framing lines up with Sinestro's comic-book history as the eventual founder of the fear-fueled Yellow Lantern Corps.
The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is back as Guy Gardner for the second time this season, though HBO hasn't detailed how large his role in the finale will be.
The theories it's sparked
None of this is confirmed by HBO beyond what's on screen, but the trailer has fans piecing together a few competing theories.
The most discussed centers on John Stewart potentially becoming the DCU's first Yellow Lantern. In the trailer, the Hal-O-Gram warns Stewart that "you're taking a very big risk," which some viewers read as a warning about trusting Sinestro or accepting a yellow ring rather than continuing on the path of a traditional Green Lantern. It's a theory, not a confirmed plot point, and the show has left it deliberately ambiguous.
A second theory concerns Hal Jordan himself. Some viewers have pointed to a circular mark visible on Hal's arm in trailer footage and connected it to an alien cloning device introduced earlier in the season, raising the possibility that the season's mystery ends with some version of Hal returning rather than staying dead. Again, nothing in the trailer confirms this outright, and Gamingonix has not verified any plot details beyond what's shown in the footage itself.
