Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave releases September 17, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo confirmed at a June 2026 Direct that also revealed a new gameplay trailer. Developer Intelligent Systems announced the eighteenth mainline entry in the tactics series during a Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025, with a debut trailer showing tactical combat and cinematics against a wartime backdrop.
Standard digital and physical editions run $69.99 and $79.99 respectively. A $120 "Dagdan Collection" special edition adds a steel case, an artbook, character art cards, and a map of the continent of Dagda. Preorders are live now, and retailers have warned the physical special edition may sell through before launch.
Story and setting
Fortune's Weave centers on the Heroic Games, a continent-wide combat tournament originally created to reduce large-scale wars but now used as a tool for political control. The story splits across four playable leads, each representing a different read on that conflict: Cai, a village boy from Ribeira fighting to free his imprisoned father; Queen Theodora of Saramis, seeking the strength to hold her throne; Dietrich, a swordsman from Fódlan hunting a worthy opponent; and Leda, who's sensitive to the underlying structure of the "Weave" itself and starts noticing the world may not be a single, fixed timeline.
Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have said players can switch between the four routes as the story progresses rather than committing to one path for the whole game, a bigger structural swing than the three-route split in 2019's Three Houses. Dietrich's route is confirmed to touch Fódlan, suggesting at least some connection to that game's world, though the studio hasn't detailed how deep that link runs.
New gameplay systems
An August 4, 2026 Nintendo Direct dedicated to the game detailed several new mechanics on top of returning Three Houses staples like combat arts, gambits, and Crests:
- Blaze Arts — units spend their own HP to trigger map-wide special abilities, filling a "blaze gauge" that grants buffs until it caps out, at which point the unit's max HP is halved for the rest of the battle. Nintendo has compared the risk/reward feel to the magic system in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.
- Clashes — grid-free, row-based skirmishes similar in presentation to Dragon Quest's battle screens, used mainly inside explorable dungeons where players hunt for quests and resources.
- Blessings — temporary, whole-team buffs unlocked by praying at in-world temples, usable once per battle.
- Weapon system overhaul — the traditional Weapon Triangle (sword beats axe beats lance beats sword) is gone. Each weapon type instead carries its own baseline mechanic and battlefield role, a bigger structural change than any single Fire Emblem entry has made to weapons in years.
Early hands-on previews from outlets including Pocket Tactics and Shacknews, published after the August Direct, described the game as ambitious in scope, with a heavier emphasis on character-driven writing across the four routes.
What's next
With release five days out, Nintendo has confirmed the core release-day package but hasn't detailed post-launch content, DLC, or a New Game Plus structure. Intelligent Systems has stayed quiet on any Amiibo support or a physical-only bonus beyond the Dagdan Collection. Gamingonix will update this article with review coverage and any last-minute patch or day-one update details as they're confirmed.
