Borderlands' Canceled MMO Is Back: Fans Revive Borderlands Online in English

A fan-led restoration of Borderlands Online, the MMO that 2K and Gearbox canceled in 2015, entered public playtesting on October 4. Modder EpicNNG, who leads the project, says the build is fully translated into English and had drawn more than 3,500 players within its first days.

What Borderlands Online Was

2K announced Borderlands Online in late 2014 as a free-to-play looter-shooter MMO built for the Chinese market, developed with Shanda Games and creative input from Gearbox. It reached limited testing in China in 2015 but never launched. Take-Two shut the project down that November when it closed 2K China, the roughly 150-person studio behind it, citing a poor return on the time needed to finish it.

The game was effectively lost outside of leaked footage and a handful of builds that circulated among collectors for years afterward.

How the Revival Works

EpicNNG says the restoration started about 17 months ago after obtaining a working build of the game. Early progress was slow — the team initially struggled to get past the login screen — before advancing to what EpicNNG has described as one of the last, if not final, internal builds of Borderlands Online.

The English localization required more than translating text. Because English strings run longer than the original Chinese, the team resized UI elements and rebuilt some HUD components from scratch, including custom icon work. The current build supports 1440p resolution, 120 frames per second, and an unlocked field of view, running well beyond the game's original 2015 target specs.

The project, known informally as BLOL, is free and not monetized. EpicNNG has warned players to expect bugs, broken skills, missing animations, and server outages during this playtest phase, which can be played solo or online.

Borderlands Online is not an official Gearbox or 2K product, and Take-Two owns the Borderlands IP outright. As of this week, Take-Two has not issued a takedown or public statement on the revival, but the company has not licensed or endorsed it either, and fan recreations of this kind remain legally vulnerable at any point.

A Separate, Unconfirmed Rumor

This revival is unrelated to a separate rumor that's circulated online since July: a claim, sourced to a single content creator citing an unnamed contact in 2K business development, that Bungie, Sony, 2K, and Gearbox held early talks about a Destiny-style, live-service take on the original Borderlands, built around customizable protagonists rather than the series' classic Vault Hunters. The same rumor floated a Borderlands 2 remake as a timed PlayStation exclusive.

None of the four companies named have confirmed any such talks, and the claim traces back to an unverified social media post with no track record behind its source. Bungie's only publicly confirmed project remains Marathon. Readers should treat this strictly as speculation, not as news of an in-development Borderlands MMO.

Why It Matters

2K has never revisited an official Borderlands MMO since 2015, despite the franchise's growth through Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4. That a fan team could reconstruct and localize a scrapped build well enough to draw thousands of players in days says more about enduring demand for the idea than it does about Take-Two's plans. Whether BLOL stays online long enough to matter depends entirely on whether Take-Two decides to act on its ownership of the IP.
